Is my engagement ring a marital or joint asset?

Most jurisdictions consider an engagement ring to be a pre-marital gift in consideration of a contract to marry.  As long as the parties marry, the ring recipient has fulfilled the contract and the gift is complete.  Accordingly, the engagement ring is usually considered non-marital or separate property.
